Here are three tips that will help improve the indoor air quality of your home.

• Eliminate pollution sources. One of the most effective ways to improve the indoor air quality of your home is to get rid of all the pollution sources or at least minimize their emissions. Common pollutants include gas, kerosene, coal, wood, asbestos-containing insulation, household cleaners, pesticides and some personal care products. Asbestos-containing pollution supplies can be sealed or confined, while sources like woodstoves can be altered to lower their emissions.
• Improve ventilation throughout your home. Simply letting more fresh air inside will reduce the amount of air pollutants in your home and improve indoor air quality. Since most HVAC systems do not automatically bring the outside air into your house, you will have to do it yourself. Start by opening your doors and windows, running attic or window fans and opening the vent control on any window air conditioners to improve the unit’s outdoor ventilation rate. Kitchen and bathroom fans that exhaust outside also improve indoor air quality by eliminating any contaminants from the room and boosting the rate of ventilation. Many of San Diego’s newer houses now come with mechanical systems designed to pull fresh air inside.
• Invest in an air cleaner or purifier. Installed as a part of your HVAC system, these units filter out indoor contaminants or particles whenever your system is running. The clean air is then circulated through your entire house via your heating and air conditioning system’s ductwork.
